The inner core has a groove for you to wire lock the grip to the bar (although this is often not required), includes a recess for the twist to ensure that no sharp edges protrude.

Ensure the handlebar is clean, dry and there and no sharp burrs that could cut the grips.
We use brake cleaner to wet the surface of the handlebar and the grip inner, then quickly and firmly slide the grip all the way on before the brake cleaner dries. You need to make sure the bike is solid as it takes a fair bit of force to get the grips on, we find it easiest to stand at the side of the bike and pull the grips on from other side so you can pull your bike against your body.
